Our competition winners
Choosing the winners was difficult because the entries approached the question from so many different perspectives.
We are delighted to announce our two winners:
Charlotte “My biggest learning from an allotment is that teaching my children to grow their own food today is planting seeds for a healthier tomorrow.”Charlotte's quote stood out because it captures the importance of
passing growing knowledge to the next generation.
Teaching children how food is grown gives them practical skills and an understanding of food, seasons and the natural world. It also helps ensure that knowledge developed by generations of growers continues to be passed on.
Sonya “My biggest learning from an allotment so far is that people grow there too.”Sonya's quote is short, but it reflects many of the themes found throughout the entries.
People told us that their allotments had helped them develop patience, confidence, resilience, friendships and knowledge. In that sense, while allotment holders cultivate their plots, the experience also develops the people who grow them.
Our runners-up
We also selected two runners-up whose quotes reflected many of the values expressed across the competition.
Matthew “My biggest learning from an allotment is that it’s never just about growing vegetables. It’s about growing confidence, friendships, wellbeing and an appreciation for the little things that nature gives us every day.”Matthew's words bring together several of the themes that appeared repeatedly in the entries – particularly confidence, community, wellbeing and connection with nature.
Joanne “My biggest learning from an allotment is… every seed grows more than a plant, and the biggest harvest isn’t always what you carry home.”
Joanne's quote reflects the idea that the value of an allotment cannot be measured by produce alone.
Knowledge, friendships, confidence, new skills and the satisfaction of growing are also important outcomes of having a plot.
